The association is one of a series of initiatives promoted by the International Maritime Organization, seeking to involve women from all maritime sectors. Carla Limcaoco, vice-chairman and managing director of Philippine Transmarine Carriers, is among those urging support for the project, expected to come to fruition in 2009.<\/p>\n
She explained that its goals go well beyond issues of gender, to fostering a widening awareness of corporate social responsibility and respect for the environment. The IMO in 2007 helped pave the way for Women in Maritime Philippines (Wimaphil) with Ms Limcaoco as its first president. She wants the associations to raise the profile of women, address health issues including HIV\/AIDS among seafarers, encourage care for the environment, and examine maritime security.<\/p>\n
IMO regional co-ordinator Asia, Brenda Pimentel, who is adviser to Wimaphil, and Maria Elena Bautista, undersecretary of the department of transport and communications and head of the Maritime Industry Authority in the Philippines, are backing the plans.<\/p>\n
The moves stem from the IMO Women in Development Programme. Pamela Tansey, director of the programme, said that practical results grew out of a forum in Samoa in October 2003, resulting in the Pacific Women in Maritime Association.<\/p>\n
Shortly afterwards, there arose a network for professional women in the maritime and port sectors of West and Central Africa, and Women In The Maritime Sector In Eastern & Southern Africa (Womesa), chaired by Kenya Maritime Authority director Nancy Karigithu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
