{"id":1818,"date":"2012-01-05T11:40:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-05T11:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport-congress\/2012\/01\/05\/strikes-leave-auckland-licking-its-wounds\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:33:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:33:27","slug":"strikes-leave-auckland-licking-its-wounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport-congress\/news\/oceania\/strikes-leave-auckland-licking-its-wounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Strikes leave Auckland licking its wounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In December,<\/p>\n<p><i> Port Strategy<\/i> <\/p>\n<p>reported that mediation strikes between the port and the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) had ended in failure.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes have already cost Auckland Maersk\u2019s Southern Star service and there has been talk of job losses.<\/p>\n<p>Ports of Auckland chief executive, Tony Gibson has said that loss of business is inevitable as customers look for alternatives and contingencies because of the need for a reliable service.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Christie, general manager customer supply chain at Fonterra, said to <i>PS<\/i>: \u201cFonterra has moved most of its export shipments from Auckland to other ports from the end of January until further notice. The Co-operative made this decision to ensure certainty of supply for its international customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The port has revised its offering to the union \u2013 which includes a 10% pay increase, 20% bonuses on hourly rates and the retention of existing benefits and entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>MUNZ has retaliated by saying that the strikes have actually been about job security, not wages.
