Speaking exclusively to PS at TOC Europe 2018, Navis vice president and general manager for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region Chuck Schneider said that people have built up confidence in semi-automated terminals, but for fully-automated terminals, he commented: \u201cYou\u2019ve taken an industry that\u2019s slow to adopt new technologies with people that have been in the industry many years and asked them to pilot the space shuttle.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout proper training and processes, they can\u2019t get the most out of the system.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like driving a Formula 1 racing car and never getting out of first gear.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Mr Schneider, people \u201cunderstand how [semi-automated terminals] work, and it\u2019s repeatable because a lot of people have done it\u201d. But while it\u2019s been found that the technology for fully-automated terminals works \u2014 though \u201cyou have to stitch a lot of stuff together\u201d \u2014 more investment in people and processes is needed.<\/p>\n
Mr Schneider also discussed the important of accurate data in his response, claiming: \u201cWhen you have people entering data into systems, you get incorrect data.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you want to get to common data-sharing and one source of the truth, you have to have accurate data.\u201d Systems generated events are \u201cgood events\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe still have work to do there, but once we have a good, common set of data, we can start building on top of that to give a complete view of a container\u2019s journey. We don\u2019t have that today,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
