The Port\u2019s public marine terminals surpassed 10 million tons of general cargo for the first time and handled a record number of containers, 538,567. The momentum from 2016 continued into 2017 with a record month for general cargo and container tons. The Port\u2019s strong performance continued as it recently announced a record first quarter for general cargo tonnage.<\/p>\n<p>Supersized container ships travelling through the newly enhanced Panama Canal have been arriving at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore since last year and the Maryland Department of Transportation\u2019s Maryland Port Administration (MDOT MPA) continues to make plans to handle the increased amounts of containerized cargo. Recently, the MDOT MPA purchased 70 acres of land will be used for additional cargo opportunities including containerized cargo. This represents the first new land purchase for cargo opportunities by the MDOT MPA since 1987.<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Baltimore was recently named the most productive port in the U.S. for the third consecutive time by an independent analysis conducted by the Journal of Commerce. The Port averaged a U.S. leading 71 container moves per hour per berth, a faster rate than all other major American ports. Combining both the public and private marine terminals, the Port of Baltimore saw 31.8 million tons of international cargo cross its docks last year that was valued at approximately $49.9 billion. Baltimore is ranked as the top port among all U.S. ports for handling autos and light trucks, farm and construction machinery, imported gypsum, imported sugar, and imported aluminum. Overall Baltimore is ranked ninth for the total dollar value of cargo and 14th for cargo tonnage for all U.S. ports.<\/p>\n<p>The Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore was named a \u201cGreen Supply Chain Partner\u201d by Inbound Logistics magazine for its environmental efforts, specifically the Port\u2019s dray truck replacement program.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, MDOT MPA\u2019s Environmental Management System was recently recertified under the International Organization for Standardization\u2019s new Environmental Management System, ISO 14001:2015, which now focuses more on leadership, proactive initiatives to protect the environment, and communications strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The MDOT MPA manages the six public marine terminals at the Port of Baltimore. Business at the Port of Baltimore generates about 13,650 direct jobs, while more than 127,000 jobs in Maryland are linked to port activities.
