{"id":3813,"date":"2012-10-02T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport-congress\/2012\/10\/02\/speed-study-will-mould-future-design\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T16:01:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T15:01:07","slug":"speed-study-will-mould-future-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport-congress\/news\/container-cargo-handling\/speed-study-will-mould-future-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Speed study will mould future design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Data collection comes in two forms: collection of measurements from facilities who record the data in course of normal operations and measurements taken by study participants specifically for the study.<\/p>\n<p>Those include the Port of Bremerhaven which hosted the Spring 2012 meeting of the WG and showed members its berthing velocity measurement system, which was developed internally by the port and installed in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Hein of Bremenports commented: \u201cWe are very pleased about this system because the knowledge of the results is a great advantage for the calculation and evaluation for the future generation of our fender system. Furthermore, it is very useful for a better understanding of berthing procedures of ULCS (e-class Maersk) and in future maybe for the Triple-e-class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar data has also been provided by operators of facilities in the US, Japan and Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Rotterdam has led in the development of data collection protocols for portable measurement systems, including vessel dimension configuration and type, wind speed and direction and under-keel clearance. The 2011\u20132012 study at this site, led by Alfred Roubos of Ingenieursbureau Gemeentewerken Rotterdam, used the Smartdock LITE portable docking aid system loaned by Trelleborg to measure vessel speed and angle of approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were lucky to have the support from the Port of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam pilots\u2019 association \u2018Loodswezen\u2019, Maasvlakte Oil Terminal, and the linesmen organisation Koninklijke Roeiersvereniging de Eendracht (KRVE),\u201d said Leon Groenewegen of Delta Marine Consultants, who was instrumental in the Rotterdam study.<\/p>\n<p>Use of the Trelleborg Smartdock LITE has continued in the US, where measurements will begin at the Virginia Port Authority in September.
