In a recent government strategy paper, India has targeted itself with an annual 8.5-9.0% economic growth rate for the period 2012 to 2017.The country estimates it will need to expand exports by around 20% each year from the current 1.12bn tonnes to over 3bn tonnes by 2020.<\/p>\n
To allow this to happen, the Indian port sector is undergoing structural changes, with the state gradually giving way to more private sector participation and a more open policy regime. These changes are necessary for the large investments required in capacity and the need to improve service levels, efficiency and competitiveness.<\/p>\n
While this shows great promise for the development of the Indian port sector, in some cases there is a gap between planning and implementation because of various procedural and systemic issues. One of the key areas to address is environmental consequences.<\/p>\n
The green agenda is increasingly at the forefront for shippers, logistics companies, liner companies as well as port & terminal operators as they address their corporate social responsibility.<\/p>\n
As well as the practical issues of pollution control, the programme at GreenPort South Asia will cover environmentally efficient technologies for planning, expansion, operations and equipment as well as integrating the port into a city, investment and the greening of the logistics chain.<\/p>\n
