A central question for all port operators is a fairly simple one \u2013 what do shipowners want from the ports they use?<\/p>\n
Helping next month\u2019s GreenPort Congress consider and answer that question is Capt. Simon Merritt, whose 37 years with Carisbrooke Shipping Ltd has combined extensive seagoing experience, technical leadership and a sustained commitment to innovation and the development of a more efficient and sustainable maritime fleet.<\/p>\n
He will join a shipowner panel for a session on the second morning of GreenPort Congress \u2013 7-9 October at Portsmouth International Port \u2013 which will explore and discuss the challenges they are facing, and how ports can support their journey to net-zero. The conversation will to cover subjects including coordination with ports, cold ironing and shore power, alternative fuel bunkering, changing regulations, and cost allocation and ROI.<\/p>\n
As Senior Fleet Manager, Capt. Merritt has overall responsibility for Carisbrooke Shipping\u2019s fleet, encompassing its technical operations, innovation, maintenance, regulatory compliance and safety.<\/p>\n
From office cadet to first command at just 23 years of age and eight years as Master, in more recent years Merritt has played a leading role in driving the company\u2019s innovation and decarbonisation agenda. He has successfully led bids securing funding through six rounds of the CMDC, supporting the installation of a demonstrator wind-propulsion system and live demonstrations of a hydrogen-fuelled engine.<\/p>\n
Carisbrooke Shipping\u2019s success last year saw them awarded both the Technology and Innovation\u00a0Award by Maritime UK, and the Technology Game-Changer Award at Maritime Solent.<\/p>\n
