{"id":520,"date":"2020-08-24T13:51:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T12:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport-congress\/2020\/08\/24\/wind-power-drives-future-ferry-efficiency\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:23:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:23:08","slug":"wind-power-drives-future-ferry-efficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport-congress\/news\/projects-initiatives-greenport\/wind-power-drives-future-ferry-efficiency\/","title":{"rendered":"Wind power drives future ferry efficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During lockdown, a Norsepower Rotor Sail was installed on the Scandlines hybrid ferry, the <em>MV Copenhagen<\/em>, hybrid ferry operating on the Rostock-Gedser route between Germany and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScandlines has a strong track record of investing in new clean technologies to reduce emissions across its fleet,\u201d said Tuomas Riski, CEO, Norsepower.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ability to harness the wind through Norsepower\u2019s Rotor Sail &#8211; alongside hydrodynamic hull optimisation, and hybrid electric propulsion system with a battery powered energy storage &#8211; makes the <em>M\/V Copenhagen<\/em> one of the world\u2019s most energy-efficient ferries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wind focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The installation was undertaken as part of the EU funded Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) project launched in late 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The project has the aim of installing five wind assisted propulsion units on to a series of different vessels operating in the North Sea and Baltic Sea to test, validate and help facilitate the uptake off wind-assisted propulsion technologies.<\/p>\n<p>These systems are expected to deliver between 4 to 5% fuel savings &#8211; corresponding to the same amount of CO2 on average and more than 20% in optimal wind conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The steel foundation (21 tonnes) for the Rotor Sail (42 tonnes) was put in place during an ordinary yard stay back in November 2019.
