This has a significant impact on productivity and raises costs.

“Shipping companies are forced to pay high war insurance premiums and the ports can only handle a few ships at a time. This significantly slows the off-loading process and potentially compromises the quality of the supplies. With the extra work required to berth ships at damaged docks, the additional costs are transferred in their entirety to the Yemeni consumer,” explained the UNDP.

Mukalla and Aden investment needed

UNDP partnered with Yemen’s Port Authorities, and the Dutch government through The Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and the Port of Rotterdam to assess and improve the capacity of each port.

The Port of Mukalla has largely avoided damage from the war, but has incurred some infrastructure damage and is suffering from a lack of infrastructure maintenance, limited capacity and inadequate equipment, said the UNDP. The port is seeing an increased number of ships that pre-war were calling at a greater number of ports.

Aden has faced less disruption than other areas of Yemen and this has created reliance on the Port of Aden. However, the port faces worsening delays and risks to worker safety if the original infrastructure isn’t updated and a maintenance system isn’t established, warns the UNDP.

The container terminal has ageing and outdated equipment, though the port is in the process of establishing a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system with the support of UNDP.

“Without intervention, the ports of Aden and Mukalla will continue to experience limited productivity,” warns the UNDP. “Their committed and passionate staff have the potential to welcome more ships, but they need new equipment and training.”

After the assessment, UNDP will work with Yemen’s port authorities improve conditions for workers, increase the delivery of food, fuel, and medicine, and transfer the savings to Yemenis.

[28
["post-638","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-middle-east
["GET
