The 17th GreenPort Congress and Cruise conference will be hosted by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges

GreenPort Congress is the meeting place for the port community to discuss and learn the latest in sustainable environmental practice.

It offers ports ways to reduce their carbon footprint and be more sensitive to environmental considerations, both of which are vital to future success.

Industry insight

One of the hot topics up for discussion at the conference this year will be the subject of fuel and energy provision for shipping and cruising.

Bogdan Oldakowski, secretary general, Baltic Ports Organization will present on the project initiative ’Baltic Ports for Climate’, which aims to reduce GHG emissions from port and shipping activities in the Baltic Sea Region.

There will be a wider discussion on powering ships in port, which will include an on-shore power supply panel discussion.

This will include discussion on the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation and FuelEU Maritime and the requirement to have shore power facilities installed by 2030. The panel will include Sebastian Ebbing, technical advisor climate, marine fuels, innovation and funding, Verband Deutscher Reeder (VDR).

Monitoring is another topic up for much discussion at the conference, including how ports can monitor their emissions

Megan Turner, environment and sustainability manager, Port of Dover UK, will use her port as a case study to talk about the methodologies of monitoring technology. She will also discuss interesting results and hurdles the port has had to overcome to establish its monitoring programme.

Transitioning to cleaner fuels will be a key topic for debate.

Royal Haskoning DHV will demonstrate solutions for cleaner operation from the consulting engineers’ point of view, to include electrification and integration of large-scale renewable generation.
