{"id":10028,"date":"2016-07-22T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2016\/07\/22\/cyber-attacks-hit-port-vendors\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:56:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:56:22","slug":"cyber-attacks-hit-port-vendors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/equipment\/cyber-attacks-hit-port-vendors\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber attacks hit port vendors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Sohn, supervisory special agent of the FBI Los Angeles cyber outreach division, spoke to seaport stakeholders, port operators and vendors at a cybersecurity seminar held by American Association of Port Authorities.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that sometimes a port operator doesn\u2019t learn that a system has been hacked until a vendor informs them that they have no received a payment.<\/p>\n<p>Under inspection the port may find that someone has illegally change the routing number for a vendor\u2019s bank account.<\/p>\n<p>In a lot of cases, banks will not reverse the charges because it was originally authorised by the port itself.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bloomberg BNA<\/em> were told that the average cost per company affected is approximately $130,000, and insurers do not pay out on claims in many cases.
