The Port of Tacoma invested $1.5 million for the forested land, known as \u201cJulia\u2019s Gulch,\u201d while the City of Tacoma added $300,000. Schnitzer Steel provided $320,500 toward the purchase and stewardship of the land. One of the unique aspects of Schnitzer Steel\u2019s contribution was $75,000 dedicated exclusively to the ongoing stewardship of the land. Under the agreement, the Cascade Land Conservancy holds a conservation easement on the property to monitor and protect the land, ensuring it remains open space forever. \u201cWe at the Port of Tacoma appreciate the way our customers, tenants, employees and neighbors have embraced our commitment to protect and improve our environment,\u201d said Port of Tacoma Commissioner Clare Petrich. \u201cThat means understanding the broader definition of \u2018environment\u2019 \u2013 what makes us call a place home, how it includes people, businesses, culture and history as well as our natural systems.\u201d<\/p>\n
