The survey of business leaders in the transport sector revealed that <\/span> growing pressure to be \u2018green\u2019 from <\/span> Government and consumers has <\/span> led to a huge increase in the need <\/span> for \u2018green collar\u2019 skills and services, <\/span> with over a third of respondents <\/span> concerned about their company\u2019s <\/span> future ability to satisfy its \u2018green <\/span> collar\u2019 needs. <\/span> The survey, conducted by <\/span> ICM research on behalf of Royal <\/span> Haskoning, revealed that demand <\/span> for \u2018green collar\u2019 workers \u2013 the <\/span> term used to describe those that <\/span> work in environmental-related <\/span> roles or industries \u2013 will increase <\/span> dramatically over the next 12 <\/span> months. Nearly half of businesses <\/span> in the transport sector predict <\/span> their company\u2019s need for \u2018green <\/span> collar\u2019 skills and services will <\/span> increase in the future, and a third <\/span> believe their workforce would <\/span> need to increase by as much as <\/span> 6-10 percent. <\/span> The shift in skill requirements <\/span> for transport businesses is already <\/span> underway and will continue to <\/span> grow at a rapid rate, with 23% <\/span> of transport businesses surveyed <\/span> already employing someone with <\/span> \u2018green collar\u2019 responsibilities. Of <\/span> those that don\u2019t currently employ <\/span> \u2018green collar\u2019 workers, almost <\/span> a quarter (23%) believed their <\/span> company soon planned to make <\/span> use of \u2018green collar\u2019 skills services <\/span> and products, with nearly a third <\/span> (27%) hoping to do so in the next <\/span> six to 12 months. <\/span> A growing eco consciousness <\/span> and increased regulatory scrutiny <\/span> means businesses in the transport <\/span> sector are feeling pressure from all <\/span> directions to be \u2018green\u2019. According <\/span> to respondents, the top reasons for <\/span> an increased need in \u2018green collar\u2019 <\/span> skills and services was the need to <\/span> meet Government and legislative <\/span> sustainability targets and criteria <\/span> (33%) and customer pressure <\/span> to be \u2018green\u2019 (33%) followed <\/span> by internal environment policy <\/span> targets (20%). <\/span> \u201cAs a country we are steadily <\/span> recognising the need for \u2018green\u2019 <\/span> products, services and skills, <\/span> but companies are failing to <\/span> take action. Our research found <\/span> that just over one in four (26%) <\/span> transport companies didn\u2019t have <\/span> an environmental policy in place, <\/span> and of those companies, a further <\/span> 27% admit there are no plans <\/span> to implement one\u201d, commented <\/span> Henry Rowe, member of the Royal <\/span> Haskoning board of management. <\/span> \u201cAs pressure mounts for British <\/span> businesses to implement \u2018green\u2019 <\/span> strategies and services, the worry <\/span> remains whether our current and <\/span> future domestic skills market can <\/span> service these demands. We need to <\/span> encourage the take up of science <\/span> and engineering degrees and create <\/span> an environment that fosters homegrown <\/span> talent in order to ensure <\/span> Britain benefits, and not suffers <\/span> from, the forthcoming \u2018green <\/span> collar\u2019 boom.\u201d<\/p>\n
