The new guide is intended to provide an overview of the current status of ballast water treatment technologies.<span> <\/span> A global requirement for ballast water treatment arises from the International Convention for The Control of Ships\u2019 Ballast Water<span> <\/span> and Sediments, which will require<span> <\/span> certain ship types to use treatment<span> <\/span> systems.<span> <\/span> Dr Gillian Reynolds, Principal Environment and Sustainability Advisor at Lloyd\u2019s Register, responsible for developing the<span> <\/span> guide, said: \u201cThe intention is to<span> <\/span> help ship operators, regulators and<span> <\/span> other stakeholders understand<span> <\/span> the availability and development<span> <\/span> of commercial solutions and the<span> <\/span> technologies involved.\u201d<span> <\/span> The latest guide gives more<span> <\/span> information on estimates of<span> <\/span> CAPEX (capital expenditure)<span> <\/span> and OPEX (operating expenses)<span> <\/span> related to the ballast water<span> <\/span> treatment systems and it<span> <\/span> outlines the significant moves by<span> <\/span> manufacturers towards obtaining<span> <\/span> system approval, active substance<span> <\/span> approval as required and Type<span> <\/span> Approval certification.<span> <\/span> It is apparent that suitably approved ballast water treatment systems meeting the requirements of the International<span> <\/span> Convention for the Control<span> <\/span> of Ships\u2019 Ballast Water and<span> <\/span> Sediments are now available,<span> <\/span> and in future more will become<span> <\/span> available.
