The first biomass exchange is to be launched in Rotterdam, while in the US, Georgia is upgrading one of its terminals to cater for pellets.

The Rotterdam exchange is a joint development by the Port of Rotterdam and energy exchange company APX-ENDEX after a deal struck between the two companies in 2010.

“In the port area itself, we foresee a market of two to three million tonnes in 2025,” said Hans Smits, chief executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The global market for wood pellets is at present estimated to stand at around 10 million tonnes a year and experts predict that demand could grow by six times this amount by 2020.

On the other side of the world, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and Canadian stevedore Logistec have agreed to upgrade the East River Terminal in Brunswick. This lies close to the timber and peanut pellet manufacturing facilities and means a competitive link through to European biomass markets.

The investment of US$7m from the GPA and US$5m from Logistec will expand operations and deepen Berths 1 and 2 plus the Lanier Dock area to 36 feet at mean low water. The move will also raise capacity for a broad range of general and bulk cargo.

The facility’s new capacity will triple to one million tons annually and will create nearly 300 jobs in Georgia. It’s due to come into operation by January 2012.

Article first published in Port Strategy

Energy derived from biomass products is becoming increasingly significant around the globe with the concern for sustainability and security of supply – and with it comes a need for large-scale biomass bulk terminals in ports.

[22
["post-10205","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-products-services-greenport
["GET
