{"id":10297,"date":"2016-10-25T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-25T08:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2016\/10\/25\/epa-reports-on-port-strategy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:58:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:58:08","slug":"epa-reports-on-port-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/regulation-policy-greenport\/epa-reports-on-port-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA reports on port strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It believes that the North American and U.S. Caribbean Sea Emissions Control Areas, which require lower sulphur fuel to be used for large ocean-going vessels (OGVs), has reduced fuel-based emissions by about 90%.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA supports these efforts but it encourage them to continue working hard into the future to reduce emissions further.<\/p>\n<p>Another key finding from the report, Reducing Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases at US Ports, found that port-related diesel emissions impact public health and the climate.<\/p>\n<p>It estimated that around 39m people in the US currently live in close proximity to a port, therefore exposed to air pollution and at risk of developing asthma, heart disease and other health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Research is increasingly documenting the effects that climate change is having and will increasingly have on air and water quality, weather patterns, sea levels, human health, ecosystems, agricultural crop yield, and critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The EPA report advised that we should replace older, dirtier diesel vehicles and equipment first. It said that older trucks and equipment are longstanding fixtures of many port operations, and it will take many years before these fleets turn over to newer technology.<\/p>\n<p>Accelerating the retirement of older port vehicles and equipment and replacing them with the cleanest technology will reduce emissions and increase public health benefits beyond what would be achieved without further voluntary actions.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, CO<sup>2<\/sup> does continue to increase but there are effective strategies to deal with this. Port-related CO<sup>2<\/sup> emissions are projected to increase from current levels for all mobile sources in future years, in large part due to significant increases in economic trade and activity.<\/p>\n<p>This assessment evaluated voluntary replacements of diesel vehicles and equipment with zero emissions and other advanced technologies that are currently in use or in development for most port sectors.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the potential for replacing older cargo handling equipment with electric technologies is significant, with CO<sup>2<\/sup> emissions being reduced in 2030 by up to 18% and in 2050 by up to 45%.<\/p>\n<p>As the importance for reducing greenhouse gases across US ports, and ports around the world, increases, the EPA points out that there are effective strategies available for every type and size of port.<\/p>\n<p>But overall, more focus is needed to reduce port-related emissions.<\/p>\n<p>State and local governments, ports and port operators, communities, and other stakeholders can use the EPA assessment as a tool to inform priorities and decisions about their port area.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to illustrate how more investment in reducing port-related emissions through voluntary, place-based programs can make a difference.
