Reduced rates were approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for the next 24 years, while the Southern California Edison (SCE) is to install major electric infrastructure at no cost to the port of its tenants.<\/p>\n
These latest developments are the result of an ongoing fight by the port to win support for electrifying more port operations to improve air quality and increase productivity.<\/p>\n
Now, the port says its tenants will be able to invest to continue to improve productivity and efficiency with a reliable, reasonably-priced supply of electricity and modern infrastructure.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s estimated that the new rates will save maritime operators at the Port of Long Beach 15% each year on their electric bills over the 24-year terms, or around US$350m compared to the current rates.<\/p>\n
SCE will install new electric lines with voltage increased to 66 kilovolts and new substations as needed to serve the growing load.<\/p>\n
In an effort to \u2018electrify\u2019 the port, the Long Beach Board of Harbour Commissioners have reached several other important milestones including obtaining and CPUC tariff rule which permits the port of provide shore power to ships at berth and eliminates a costly separate SCE electric demand charge for each vessel call, reducing overall demand charges by 90% and saving vessels and maritime operators around US$85m per year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
