The port was built entirely from scratch,” he said.

He also took the opportunity to reassure those worried about tapping into the Arctic’s precious natural resources.

“We realise that this region’s ecosystem is very sensitive to any human interference. I know for certain that the port, the ships that will use it, the production methods used and the transportation system all use the most advanced technology and meet the highest environmental standards,” he added.

The Christophe de Margerie LNG ‘Yamalmax’ tanker is the first of a series of 15 ships being built to service the project.

In just one voyage, the vessel can carry 172,600 m3 of LNG, sufficient to supply the country of Sweden with all its gas requirements for almost four weeks. The vessel is 299m long (the height of the Eiffel tower) and 60m high.

The new port and its first vessel mooring are the result of a painstaking collaboration between Sovcomflot, Novatek and Yamal LNG, which took close to ten years.

Construction of Sabetta Port is based on the principles of public-private partnership and it is the world’s largest infrastructural project being implemented in the Arctic latitudes today.

The Arctic is a rich location in terms of its reserves.
