The number of Contracting States now stands at 43 countries, representing around 32.54% of world merchant shipping tonnage. Thirty-five percent of global tonnage will trigger the Convention into force.<\/p>\n
Turkey\u2019s instrument of accession was presented by His Excellency Mr Abdurrahman Bilgi\u00e7, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Turkey to IMO, to IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, during the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 67) session, which took place today.<\/p>\n
Mr Sekimizu said these latest accessions are an important milestone, bringing the Convention significantly closer to entering into force.<\/p>\n
If and when the Convention does enter into force, the global shipping industry is expected to have to invest around US$100bn in new ballast water treatment systems, said the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS).<\/p>\n
Shipping companies still lack confidence, said the ICS, so issues such as the lack of robustness of the current IMO type-approval process and the criteria used for sampling ballast water during Port State Control inspections, still need to be addressed.<\/p>\n
As a result, the ICS has made a detailed submission to the MEPC explaining the industry\u2019s concerns and a proposed way forward.<\/p>\n
This takes the form of an MEPC Resolution which would serve as a \u2018gentlemen\u2019s agreement\u2019 that necessary actions will be taken with respect to the Convention\u2019s implementation as soon as it enters into force.
