{"id":10995,"date":"2017-06-19T15:52:00","date_gmt":"2017-06-19T14:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2017\/06\/19\/europes-dockers-set-july-strike-dates\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:04:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:04:04","slug":"europes-dockers-set-july-strike-dates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe\/europes-dockers-set-july-strike-dates\/","title":{"rendered":"Europes dockers set July strike dates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The two-hour stoppage, agreed at the Council\u2019s European Zone Assembly held in Slovenia on June 8 and 9, will see dockworkers across European ports walk out of their jobs from 1000 hrs to 1200 hrs on June 29.<\/p>\n<p>The IDC\u2019s industrial action, as well as offering support to Spanish dockers, is in direct protest to policies agreed upon by the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The IDC move comes in light of protests against Spain\u2019s reform measures concerning the hiring of dockworkers, which were approved by the country\u2019s parliament on May 18.<\/p>\n<p>A 48-hour strike was held by Spanish longshoremen on June 14 and 15 after negotiations between employers and workers regarding the implementation of the new regulations broke down over a dispute regarding the safeguarding of 6,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>According to worker union UGT, dockers will hold alternate strikes for 48-hour periods between June 26 and 28, June 29 and July 1, July 3 and 5 and July 6 and 8.<\/p>\n<p>Further industrial action has already been set for June 19, 21 and 23.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s new regulations aim to tackle the country\u2019s system of closed-shop docker hiring, a practise ruled as violating the EU\u2019s freedom of establishment principle by the European Court in December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In July last year, the country was fined E15.6m for failing to change the system and is being hit by daily penalties of E27,500 until it complies with the court\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign trade plays a crucial role in Spain\u2019s economy and has been important for its recovery over the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>Around 80% of the country\u2019s imports and 60% of exports pass through Spanish ports.<\/p>\n<p>The IDC has also announced plans to re-join the European Commission\u2019s Sectorial Social Dialogue Committee to push for equal treatment for all dockworkers, as well as to devise a strategy to support dockworkers in Gothenburg in Sweden following alleged threats to their job security from large maritime corporations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Dockworkers Council (IDC) has announced plans to hold a Europe-wide strike in solidarity with Spanish dockers\u2019 protests against liberalising reforms to Spain\u2019s dock labour system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":10996,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"sponsor":[],"class_list":["post-10995","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10995","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10995"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10995\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":10997,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10995\/revisions\/10997"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/10996"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10995"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10995"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10995"},{"taxonomy":"sponsor","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sponsor?post=10995"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
