{"id":1106,"date":"2020-08-17T22:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T21:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2020\/08\/17\/beirut-blast-chemical-ownership-a-mystery\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:48:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:48:54","slug":"beirut-blast-chemical-ownership-a-mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/middle-east\/beirut-blast-chemical-ownership-a-mystery\/","title":{"rendered":"Beirut blast chemical ownership a mystery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a post on 17 August, Dryad Global said that ownership of the some 2,750t of ammonium nitrate carried into the port by the Moldovan-flagged <em>Rhosus<\/em> seven years ago should be resolvable.<\/p>\n<p>However, Reuters interviews and trawls for documents across 10 countries have revealed \u201cmissing documentation, secrecy and a web of small, obscure companies that span the globe,\u201d said Dryad Global.<\/p>\n<p>The company stated: \u201cAmong the still-unanswered questions: who paid for the ammonium nitrate and did they ever seek to reclaim the cargo when the Rhosus was impounded? And if not, why not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the <em>Rhosus<\/em> was uninsured, according to two sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investigation begins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lebanese authorities are leading an investigation at the port following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/news101\/world\/middle-east\/chemical-explosion-destroys-lebanese-port\" target=\"_blank\">the blasts which left at least 200 people dead and around 6000 people injured<\/a>. French investigators and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have joined the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from the port, David Hale, the US Under Secretary of State for political affairs, said that the FBI \u201cwill be playing their role at the invitation of the Lebanese in order to make sure that all the answer that the Lebanese people\u2014and all of us\u2014have about what exactly happened, what led to the circumstances of this explosion. We really need to make sure that there is a thorough and a transparent, credible investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Beirut is currently under the control of Lebanese Armed Forces, as reported by GAC on 6 August.
