The new equipment will aid the five ship-to-shore crane operation currently in place at the terminal, offering carriers operations across over a kilometre of quay at three berths with between 14 and 16 metres of draft.<\/p>\n
\u201cHalterm provides global container carriers with fast and efficient access to eastern Canada, and the Halifax supply-chain reaches far inland and to the US Midwest,\u201d said Kim Holtermand, chief executive at the terminal.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter significant ship-to-shore crane investments delivered into the operation in early 2014, it is the right time to bring on new rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTGs) which will be arriving in February (one) and October (two) of next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
The terminal, which is the only facility in Eastern Canada able to handle ultra class container vessels of over 10,000 teu, is currently improving its existing container yard, a process involving the removal of three 1970s ship-to-shore crane assets and the adding of new reefer capacity, which marks an increase of over 25%.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur five active ship-to-shore cranes, with outreach up to 22 containers wide, are in excellent working condition and still under-utilised with current berth commitments,\u201d Mr Holtermand explained.<\/p>\n
Halterm uses mixed equipment for stacking \u2013 new Konecranes reachstackers, RTGs and toplift forklifts.<\/p>\n
Three new \u2018one over five\u2019 Konecranes RTGs are due to be delivered in 2018 and are set to span six lanes.<\/p>\n
