We need global action but we need it on time,” said Isabelle Ryckbost, ESPO’s Secretary General.

“There is a sense of urgency in order for the sector to contribute to the Paris objective to keep the increase of global temperature well below two degrees. The regular reporting should also help the EU and its Member States to sound the alarm if insufficient progress is made.”

Port sector

The EU and national climate measures that are currently being developed to implement the Paris Agreement, will oblige ports to reduce the carbon footprint of their land-based activities.

Ms Ryckbost said that the environmental reputation of the maritime and port sector is at stake. Moreover, ports, coastal cities and their local communities are amongst the most vulnerable to extreme weather conditions resulting from global warming.

ESPO believes that the IMO needs to strengthen its efforts and submit an initial reduction target to the stock-take process of the Paris Agreement in 2018, accompanied by short-term measures.

By 2023 it says, IMO should introduce the necessary target and measures to bend down the CO2 emissions curve.

The ETS agreement is subject to a formal approval by Council’s COREPER and the plenary of the European Parliament.

Keep informed on global solutions on CO2 emissions from shipping with GreenPort Congress America.

For more information on participating in the GreenPort Congress 2018, visit our website http://www.greenport.com/congressamerica and please contact

For America – Lucy Clifford – Head of Sales – America – Tel 001 (410) 212 8723- email lclifford@mercatormedia.com

The Events team for Europe and the rest of the World is on +44 1329 825335 or email congress@greenport.com

ESPO says it welcomes the agreement made between the European Parliament and Council setting a deadline for a global solution on CO2 emissions from shipping.

[8
["post-11315","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-projects-initiatives-greenport
["GET
