{"id":11417,"date":"2018-01-22T09:14:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T09:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2018\/01\/22\/battery-powered-ferries-delivered-to-norway\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:07:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:07:50","slug":"battery-powered-ferries-delivered-to-norway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/products-services-greenport\/battery-powered-ferries-delivered-to-norway\/","title":{"rendered":"Battery powered ferries delivered to Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tersan Shipyard built ro-ro passenger and vehicle ferries <em>Eidsfjord<\/em> and <em>Gloppefjord<\/em> will operate the Anda-Lote route in Nordfjord on the west coast of Norway for Fjord1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so proud to deliver these fully battery-operated ferries and honoured to be part of the first ferry connection in Norway where the road administration requires use of zero-emission technology,\u201d said Mehmet Gazioglu, managing director, Tersan Shipyard.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fast charging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the ferries unique selling points is that they will only need to stop for nine minutes for battery charging in ports.<\/p>\n<p>Battery charging is completed via fully automatic charging stations at the quayside. The ferries are equipped with a vacuum docking device to ensure correct docking at all times with no need to run the engines and propellers at slow speeds.<\/p>\n<p>Total battery capacity onboard each ferry is two 520kWh supplied by Siemens as the electric integrator.<\/p>\n<p>Each ferry has two 500 eKW Scania DI16 90M generators for back-up and emergency operators, which were used during the ships\u2019 maiden voyage from the shipyard.<\/p>\n<p>They are also equipped with two pcs of feathering type Azipull propellers supplied by Rolls Royce.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eidsfjord<\/em> and <em>Gloppefjord<\/em> are both equipped with an auto-crossing system which helps to ensure that the vessel makes the most efficient crossing each time.<\/p>\n<p>The system selects the most economically desirable speed by taking into consideration wind, load and waves.
