{"id":11452,"date":"2018-02-14T09:44:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T09:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2018\/02\/14\/hamburg-backs-the-potential-of-inland-navigation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:08:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T14:08:08","slug":"hamburg-backs-the-potential-of-inland-navigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe-greenport\/hamburg-backs-the-potential-of-inland-navigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamburg backs the potential of inland navigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To try to it increase the amount of freight volume this mode of transport has in the EU, the Port of Hamburg is helping organise a one-day conference to address the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EMMA Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The conference is being organised under the auspices of the Chamber Union Elbe\/Oder and the EMMA project, for which Hamburg is the lead partner.<\/p>\n<p>EMMA is funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme 2014-2020 and aims to tackle the challenges and opportunities in inland and river-sea shipping in the Baltic Sea Region.<\/p>\n<p>Hamburg argues that increasing the modal share of inland navigation in the EU will help to handle the expected growth in transport volumes in a sustainable way saving transport costs, reducing emissions and decongesting roads.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble is that even though the potential of inland waterway transport is high, it currently has only a 6% share of the freight market in the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speakers at the conference will include Kurt Bodewig, European Coordinator for Baltic-Adriatic Core Network Corridor TEN-T and Mandate Innovative Financing Instruments at DG MOVE.
