{"id":12049,"date":"2008-10-30T11:50:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T11:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2008\/10\/30\/greenport-2009-environmental-study-tour\/"},"modified":"2008-10-30T11:50:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-30T11:50:00","slug":"greenport-2009-environmental-study-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe-greenport\/greenport-2009-environmental-study-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"GreenPort 2009 Environmental Study Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Twenty-two<span> <\/span> participants joined the 2008 Tour representing ports and<span> <\/span> government agencies from Australia, South Africa, Spain,<span> <\/span> Netherlands, UK, USA, Finland, Israel, Canada and<span> <\/span> Turkey and over 4 working days visited Southampton,<span> <\/span> Portsmouth, Harwich, Felixstowe, Antwerp, Rotterdam<span> <\/span> and Amsterdam.<span> <\/span> The combination of lectures in the morning and site visits in the afternoon proved popular and participants<span> <\/span> went away with a lot of information and practical<span> <\/span> \u201chands-on\u201d experience from the port authorities visited,<span> <\/span> terminal operators such as ECT and Hutchison and port<span> <\/span> stakeholders such as Natural England and the RSPB.<span> <\/span> Following the popularity of the inaugural study tour, a 2009 Tour has been planned. Convening in the Port of Marseilles on the afternoon of February 17th. After<span> <\/span> a full day in Marseilles the Tour moves on to Genoa,<span> <\/span> La Spezia and Livorno. The weekend will be spent in<span> <\/span> Rome and then continue on to Civitavecchia and Salerno<span> <\/span> to arrive in Naples in time for the GreenPort 2009<span> <\/span> Conference on February 25-26.<span> <\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>PLANNED ITINERARY<span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Day 1 \u2013 18th February<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>MARSEILLE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span> <\/span><\/strong>Marseille is the No. 1 port in France and the fourth largest port<span> <\/span> in Europe. Marseille Fos port is a major player in the Euro-Mediterranean region, with sufficient infrastructure and space<span> <\/span> to accommodate all types of traffic: container, general cargo,<span> <\/span> dry bulk, liquid bulk, ro-ro, cars, conventional passenger and<span> <\/span> cruise traffic. The Port is constantly investing and innovating to satisfy the demand generated by international maritime<span> <\/span> transport development. Conscious of its role as corporate<span> <\/span> citizen, the Port gives priority to initiatives which reconcile<span> <\/span> economic, social and environmental issues.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Day 2 \u2013 19th February<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>GENOA<span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Genoa &#8211; the capital of Liguria \u2013 birthplace of Christopher<span> <\/span> Columbus and 2004 European Capital of Culture. The Genoa Port Authority is in year two of its Three-Year Operative Plan,<span> <\/span> a tool used to establish the scope and objectives required to<span> <\/span> achieve its development. The Plan covers the development strategies of the port with the purpose of guaranteeing<span> <\/span> the objectives as set out in the port master plan, aimed at<span> <\/span> transforming the waterfront with a series of islands to increase<span> <\/span> the capacities of the Voltri container terminal, existing oil<span> <\/span> facilities; cruise terminals and a new marina.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Day 3 \u2013 20 February<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>LA SPEZIA<span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">La Spezia Container Terminal Spa (LSCT), belongs to<span> <\/span> Contship Italia Group and is one of the most important<span> <\/span> and experienced container terminals in Europe. Part of the Eurokai Group, LSCT is located on the east side of the Gulf<span> <\/span> of La Spezia. LSCT has invested heavily in technology and innovation in order to reduce dust substances and to achieve<span> <\/span> harmony between volume growth and the environment at a<span> <\/span> \u201czero impact\u201d balance. The PORTO LAB project meets over 6,000 students every year who visit the Groups port facilities<span> <\/span> and intermodal hubs, to experience contact with transport and<span> <\/span> port culture. A trip to Livorno is also being considered subject to time \u2013 details to be announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Days 4 and 5 \u2013 21-22 February<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>ROME<span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Rome has one of the richest and fullest histories of any<span> <\/span> city. Its unique position in the world\u2019s greatest Empire, its significance as a religious and cultural centre, its turbulent<span> <\/span> centuries of aristocratic rivalries and upheavals should ensure<span> <\/span> a fascinating weekend break for the Study Tour.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Day 6 \u2013 February 23<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>CIVITAVECCHIA<span> <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Ports of Rome &#8211; Civitavecchia, Fiumicino and Gaeta<span> <\/span> &#8211; are the centre of a logistics system that links Italy to the<span> <\/span> rest of the world, in particular Rome with its 3 million plus<span> <\/span> inhabitants and is the regional hub for &#8211; Umbria, Toscana, Abruzzo, Marche and Puglia. The Civitavecchia Port Authority plans strong and dynamic expansion. In the next few years,<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Civitavecchia will become the leading cruise \u2018Head Port\u2019<span> <\/span> in the Mediterranean, with new cruise terminals located<span> <\/span> along the 3km long Cristoforo Colombo breakwater. The<span> <\/span> Port is expanding north with a new container, agricultural,<span> <\/span> bulk and car terminals together with a distripark The hub of<span> <\/span> the Grimaldi Napoli Group\u2019s new Motorways of the Sea<span> <\/span> protocol links Antwerp and Civitavecchia &#8211; a new ferry dock<span> <\/span> is currently under construction near the harbour mouth with<span> <\/span> berthing for 10 ships simultaneously.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Day 7 \u2013 February 24<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>SALERNO<span> <\/span><\/strong> The Port of Salerno plays a strategic and important role<span> <\/span> within the industrial and commercial system in central and<span> <\/span> southern Italy. The Port is linked to the logistic platform of Nola-Marcianise, Battipaglia and to the airports of<span> <\/span> Capodichino and Salerno-Costa d\u2019Amalfi , through the road<span> <\/span> and motorway networks. Many shipping lines link Salerno with the Mediterranean ports and Tyrrhenian ports, and<span> <\/span> there are regular liner services with main European and ports<span> <\/span> worldwide. The Port of Salerno has a total area of 1.7m2, 15 moorings on 5 piers, covering a total length of 3 km.<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Panoramic view of Salerno<span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">governing organisation of the port area which stretches for<span> <\/span> about 20 km along the coastline from La Pietra (Pozzuoli) to<span> <\/span> Pietrarsa (Portici).
