{"id":12191,"date":"2026-09-02T11:18:59","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T10:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/?p=12191"},"modified":"2026-09-02T11:18:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T10:18:59","slug":"uk-ports-face-major-decarbonisation-hurdles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/energy-technology-greenport\/uk-ports-face-major-decarbonisation-hurdles\/","title":{"rendered":"UK ports face major decarbonisation hurdles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK ports face significant challenges in preparing for net zero, with a government review identifying grid constraints, high costs and uncertainty over future fuels as major barriers to decarbonising maritime operations.<\/p>\n<p>The Department for Transport received 65 responses to its call for evidence on net zero ports, which ran from March to June 2025. Responses came from port operators, shipping companies, trade associations, technology providers, academics and environmental organisations, providing evidence on infrastructure, energy demand, alternative fuels and emissions reduction.<\/p>\n<p>The findings show that most port companies expect electricity demand to increase substantially by 2050, driven by shorepower, vessel charging, electrification of cranes and other equipment, electric vehicle infrastructure and new commercial activity. Respondents estimated that some ports could require two to 10 times their current grid capacity, with average future requirements reaching around 91MW.<\/p>\n<p>Grid access emerged as a critical constraint. Some ports reported connection lead times of up to 15 years, while 18 of 26 respondents said insufficient electricity supply had already caused ports or customers to lose commercial opportunities. Concerns included investment being diverted to European ports with better shore power availability.<\/p>\n<p>Onsite renewable generation is expanding, with 11 of 17 responding port companies reporting wind or solar generation. However, this is generally insufficient to meet total demand. Battery storage was identified as a potential tool for managing peaks and improving resilience, although high capital costs and space constraints remain obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>Alternative fuel infrastructure is also developing, with ports exploring methanol, hydrogen, ammonia and biofuels.
