{"id":12201,"date":"2026-09-02T14:00:05","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T13:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/?p=12201"},"modified":"2026-09-02T14:00:05","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T13:00:05","slug":"natpower-backs-uk-ports-decarbonisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/news-greenport\/natpower-backs-uk-ports-decarbonisation\/","title":{"rendered":"NatPower backs UK ports decarbonisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NatPower Marine has welcomed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/energy-technology-greenport\/uk-ports-face-major-decarbonisation-hurdles\/\">UK Government\u2019s response to its Net Zero Ports call for evidence<\/a>, saying it provides greater clarity on the role ports will play in the decarbonisation of maritime transport.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the findings offered a clearer picture of changing energy demand at ports, with shore power, vessel charging, electric port equipment and cleaner fuels expected to require significant new infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>NatPower Marine also welcomed commitments to champion ports\u2019 energy requirements through strategic energy planning and reforms to grid connections. The company said improved demand forecasting and closer collaboration between ports, shipping operators, electricity networks and investors would be essential to delivering projects.<\/p>\n<p>Stefano D.M. Sommadossi, founder, group chief strategy officer and UK chief executive of NatPower Marine, said the government\u2019s response represented \u2018an important step forward\u2019. \u201cIt gives us a clearer view of what ports need and where industry can help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sommadossi said NatPower Marine was ready to provide investment and energy expertise, potentially allowing ports to develop shore power and vessel-charging infrastructure without carrying the full cost and risk themselves.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that solutions would need to reflect the individual requirements of each port.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery port is different,\u201d he said, adding that options could include larger grid connections, battery storage, local renewable generation, private wires or smarter electricity management.<\/p>\n<p>The company said infrastructure investment should be linked to firm demand from shipping operators.
