Rather than imposing standardised solutions, it offers a flexible, risk-based approach that accounts for local conditions and emerging technologies.

Nicklas Sjøgren Koch, team leader at DBI, said: “The maritime industry is turning towards low-carbon fuels, and many ports are asking the same questions: What are the risks? How do we demonstrate that operations are safe? And how do we coordinate across the many organisations involved? This guideline provides a common language and a structured approach to answering those questions.”

The framework combines hazard identification, risk evaluation, technical and operational safeguards, emergency preparedness, governance and stakeholder engagement. It also addresses organisational readiness, enabling ports to identify gaps in training, procedures and emergency planning before introducing new fuel operations.

Developed by DBI and FORCE Technology with industry partners, the guidance draws on literature reviews, site visits, interviews, workshops and multidisciplinary hazard identification studies. Contributors include Aalborg University, Port of Rønne, Complete Solutions, DFDS and MHO-Co.

The project forms part of MissionGreenFuels, a Danish partnership focused on accelerating sustainable fuel development and deployment across sectors including shipping and aviation.

Carina Jensen, partnership director at MissionGreenFuels, said safe implementation was essential to large-scale adoption, with practical guidance helping the maritime sector move from ambition to deployment.

SafeSBU has introduced a risk-based framework helping ports manage green fuels safely and accelerate maritime decarbonisation

[7
40,2705

post-12349","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alternative-fuels-greenport","tag-alternative-fuels","tag-safesbu
["GET
