The deployment also strengthens container-handling capabilities as the terminal progresses towards more efficient and sustainable operations.

The terminal’s fleet now comprises 77 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, including 50 electric and automated units, representing approximately 65% of the total.

Mohammad Alshaikh, chief executive of DP World KSA, said: “Our continued investment in Jeddah is focused on delivering a more efficient, reliable and competitive terminal for our customers. By combining automation and electrification, we are strengthening our ability to handle growing trade volumes while reducing the environmental impact of our operations.”

The AeRTGs feature advanced automation, intelligent positioning and remote-control technology, enabling containers to be moved with greater precision and consistency. Operators control the cranes from dedicated stations, while fully electric drive systems eliminate direct diesel exhaust emissions during operation and reduce noise levels.

The deployment forms part of DP World’s wider US$800 million modernisation programme at the South Container Terminal. The programme includes infrastructure upgrades, expanded yard capabilities and plans to increase annual handling capacity from 3.9 million to five million teu.

The investment is intended to support rising trade volumes and improve the reliability of container-handling operations for shipping lines and cargo owners.

Jeddah Islamic Port serves as a key gateway for Saudi Arabia’s international trade, connecting the Kingdom with regional and global markets.

DP World in investing US$56 million in automated electric cranes to boost efficiency and cut emissions in Jeddah

[46,110
2675,249,1800,118,2720

post-12408","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy-technology-greenport","category-middle-east-greenport","tag-decarbonisation-shorepower","tag-dp-world","tag-electric-rubber-tyred-gantries","tag-electrification","tag-jeddah-islamic-port
["GET
