{"id":1692,"date":"2021-11-03T12:53:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T12:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2021\/11\/03\/hydrogen-supply-grows\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:52:10","slug":"hydrogen-supply-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/hydrogen-supply-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen supply grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/hydrogen-cuts-emissions\/1405957.article\" target=\"_blank\">Port of Gothenburg<\/a> and Norwegian energy company Statkraft plan to construct a SEK60m hydrogen production facility at the port, with operations due to commence in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know there is already significant demand in and around the port for using equipment powered by hydrogen. A number of companies and organisations are ready and waiting and we are convinced that local production of hydrogen would represent a breakthrough,\u201d said Arvid Guthed, vice president, port development, at the Gothenburg Port Authority.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4MW initial capacity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Initially the facility will have a capacity of 4MW, producing up to two tonnes of hydrogen per day. This is equivalent to 2,200 litres of diesel and could help reduce carbon emissions by at least four tonnes every day. The capacity can be expanded if demand increases, and new areas of use emerge, said the port.<\/p>\n<p>Gothenburg Port Authority and Statkraft will conduct a more in-depth investigation of the potential for an interim storage facility and filling station at the port. A preliminary study is currently being conducted with the focus primarily on safety aspects. It is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>When hydrogen is produced using fossil-free power sources, such as hydropower or wind power, the hydrogen would also be fossil free. Hydrogen can be stored and used for different types of freight-handling equipment, primarily heavy transport equipment that can be switched to fuel cell operation.
