{"id":1737,"date":"2021-11-15T12:26:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T12:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2021\/11\/15\/wales-decarbonisation-strategy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:52:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:52:23","slug":"wales-decarbonisation-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/projects-initiatives-greenport\/wales-decarbonisation-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Wales\u2019 decarbonisation strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Associated British Ports (ABP) says that it\u2019s operation at Port Talbot wants to seize the potential to create a floating offshore wind (FLOW) centre of excellence in the Celtic Sea.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of the operator\u2019s ambitious plan for South Wales in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abports.co.uk\/future-ports-port-talbot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future ports: Wales vision<\/a> strategy, which outlines its plans for a decarbonised future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to imagine a changed world, understand its opportunities and focus on the outcomes we need,\u201d said&nbsp;Andrew Harston, director ABP Wales and Short Sea Ports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe cannot make hard and fast predictions, but we can sketch the outlines of what needs doing. We need a new approach to realise the huge potential of Wales\u2019 strategic port locations; to build the foundations of a new cycle of innovation and prosperity and time is of the essence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pivotal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ABP has five ports in South Wales, Swansea, Port Talbot, Barry, Cardiff and Newport.<\/p>\n<p>They played a key role in the creation of the modern industrial world and looking ahead, ABP recognises they will now need to play a pivotal role in Wales\u2019 transition to a low carbon economy.<\/p>\n<p>Port Talbot is well positioned to be a FLOW centre of excellence&nbsp;and has the deep waters required. It also has brownfield land ready for development, excellent rail connections, proximity to steel, marine and aggregates and access to thousands of skilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>The operation is currently predominantly used for imports of coking coal, minerals and ores for Tate Steel. ABP plans to work with the steel giant and others to make its vision a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe port is a vital connection for us allowing the direct import of raw materials for steelmaking,\u201d said&nbsp;Sandip Biswas,&nbsp;Chairman of the Tata Steel UK board.<\/p>\n<p>We are excited to see ABP developing its vision for the future and look forward to working closely with ABP to realise these plans.
