{"id":177,"date":"2018-06-26T16:39:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T15:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2018\/06\/26\/exercise-caution-with-ai\/"},"modified":"2018-06-26T16:39:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-26T15:39:00","slug":"exercise-caution-with-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/terminal-operations\/exercise-caution-with-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise caution with AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking exclusively to <em>Port Strategy<\/em> at TOC Europe, Dr Christian Augustin, managing director of Yardeye said if maritime professionals look closely you see very easily the limitations of AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it is clever, does the right thing and can somehow reason, this is not considered as intelligence,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise caution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He suggested that it is wise for the industry to take small steps one at a time because in a port or terminal which operates 24\/7 you can\u2019t always update or modify something at any given time so decisions about what technology to use could have a massive impact on productivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a very wise decision not to jump on everything and push too hard,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Terminal operators also need to consider the needs of the terminal with the capability of the supplier and see what works for them because digitalisation and automation don\u2019t have values by themselves, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clear benefit needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need to help you, they ned to do something in a better, safer and more efficient way.
