{"id":259,"date":"2018-08-28T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T09:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2018\/08\/28\/hamburg-delight-at-deepening-project-decision\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T13:43:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T12:43:21","slug":"hamburg-delight-at-deepening-project-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe\/hamburg-delight-at-deepening-project-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamburg delight at deepening project decision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The procedure regarding the fairway adjustment plan to deepen the Lower and Outer Elbe to 15.6m, including at the Port of Hamburg, requested by the Federal Administrative Court, was conducted by the planning agencies responsible for the major project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very good news for our trading and shipping customers worldwide and for the whole Hamburg Metropolitan Region,\u201d said Axel Mattern, Joint CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have waited a long time for today and are now hoping for rapid implementation,\u201d added Ingo Egloff, his Executive Board colleague.<\/p>\n<p>The port is already megaship-ready and can handle the largest containerships with a slot capacity of over 20,000 TEU, as well as other mega-vessels. However, irrespective of the tide, after the fairway adjustment, ocean-going ships will be able to leave Hamburg with a draft of 13.50m; and using flood tide, with one of 14.50m.<\/p>\n<p>For shipping, the fairway adjustment will provide one extra metre of draft and the related decisive advantages. Containerships will be able to transport around 1800 more containers (TEU) per call.
