{"id":3033,"date":"2023-01-24T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T10:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2023\/01\/24\/greenport-sustainability-workshop-gives-insight-into-key-issues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:01:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:01:27","slug":"greenport-sustainability-workshop-gives-insight-into-key-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe-greenport\/greenport-sustainability-workshop-gives-insight-into-key-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"GreenPort sustainability workshop gives insight into key issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The very essence of Greenport is the exchange of knowledge and experience between practicing professionals and the workshop was specifically designed to encourage and facilitate input from the wealth of know-how and understanding brought to the event by delegates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe hope to continue to trend of micro-workshops at the next round of GreenPort Conferences \u2013 they encourage collaboration on ideas, policy and challenges facing the industry,\u201d&nbsp; said Dr Wooldridge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identifying the issues&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Commencing with strategic sustainability comments from Dr\u202fAntonis Michail,\u202fWPSP\u202ftechnical coordinator (IAPH), Heidi Neilson head of planning &amp; environment (Port of Oslo) and Herman Journ\u00e9e Chairman (EcoSLC EcoPorts), the focused workshop included participants from Asia, Europe, the UK, Australia and North America.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop focused on identifying the issues considered the \u2018most important\u2019 when developing sustainability strategies. Jason Sprott provided technical presentation on the benefits of using \u2018Materiality Assessment\u2019 \u2013 an industry accepted technique used by Sprott Planning &amp; Environment team in their work with ports and terminals across Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participants were firstly asked to list what they thought were the most important issues to consider when developing sustainability strategies in the four categories of \u2018People\u2019, \u2018Environment\u2019, \u2018Prosperity\u2019 and \u2018Partnerships\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They then used a \u2018pre-populated\u2019 template across the four sustainability categories and were asked to rank each issue in a scale of importance from 1 (low) to 10 (high).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Port role-play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants worked in \u2018stakeholder groups including: (Internal Groups) board members, executive, staff and (External Groups) community, conservation groups, financiers\/banks, shipping lines and port tenants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWhen undertaking a materiality assessment, it is critical that both internal and external viewpoints are considered \u2013 this leads to a more informed process for Strategy Development,\u201d said Mr Sprott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt was so pleasing to see the interaction and lively debate between workshop participants \u2013 each with their own valid viewpoint which is the essence of materiality assessments,\u201d added Dr Wooldridge.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the workshop are contained in the figure image above.<\/p>\n<p>Figure One shows that whilst all issues scored at least five, the top issues included Safety (People), Climate Change (Prosperity), Energy\/Fuel Transition (Environment) and Air Quality (Environment).&nbsp;Figure Two shows a comparison between internal and external stakeholder results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt was interesting to see the results of this workshop, which were indeed similar to what we\u2019ve seen across other similar surveys across Australia and New Zealand,\u201d said Mr Sprott.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find this graph provides powerful insights for an organisation when developing Sustainability Strategies \u2013 you can easily spot both similar viewpoints and those which are disparate \u2013 which is incredibly important information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2022 Greenport Congress provided a platform for a sustainability workshop hosted by Jason Sprott (Sprott Planning &amp; Environment \u2013 Australia) and Dr Chris Wooldridge from Cardiff University.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":8,"featured_media":3034,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[867,873,81,872,866,871,869,870,868],"sponsor":[],"class_list":["post-3033","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-europe-greenport","tag-cardiff-university","tag-dr-chris-wooldridge","tag-greenport-congress-cruise","tag-jason-sprott","tag-planning","tag-research","tag-sprott-planning-environment","tag-sustainability-strategy","tag-sustanability-workshop"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3033","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/8"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3033"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3033\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3035,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3033\/revisions\/3035"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/3034"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3033"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3033"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3033"},{"taxonomy":"sponsor","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sponsor?post=3033"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
