{"id":3219,"date":"2023-03-30T11:41:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T10:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2023\/03\/30\/responsible-port-infrastructure-project\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:02:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:02:58","slug":"responsible-port-infrastructure-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/projects-initiatives-greenport\/responsible-port-infrastructure-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Responsible port infrastructure project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Living Ports Project which opened earlier this week at the Port of Vigo is an ECOncrete lead project funded by the EU\u2019s Horizon 2020 programme and delivered by a consortium which includes Cardama Shipyards and Denmark Technical University.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the opening ceremony, ECOncrete chief executive and co-founder, Dr Ido Sella, said he was honoured to launch the project. \u201cIt has been a real team effort,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalented and committed people, from different disciplines, have worked together towards a common net positive goal of setting a new standard for responsible and accountable marine construction,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 70% of coastal infrastructure is built with traditional concrete which is not habitable for many types of marine organisms and requires expensive maintenance \u2013 estimated to be around \u20ac2.2 trillion per year worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>ECOncrete\u2019s revolutionary concrete technology reportedly stores carbon, encourages biodiversity, provides bio-protection benefits and is \u2018looking to set new standards in responsible marine construction\u2019 according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/responsible-marine-construction\/1479435.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr Sella who spoke to <em>GreenPort<\/em> earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A key component of the Living Ports Project is the Nautilus underwater observatory, which opened to the public on 24 March.
