With Tunley Engineering providing consultancy on emissions, the project will initially calculate baseline measurements of port activities with respect to greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful emissions such as particulates.<\/p>\n
Activities in scope include shipping, loading\/unloading, indirect energy and drayage. Industrial processes will not be included. Opportunities to decarbonise will be explored such as electrification.<\/p>\n
Participation is not mandatory but funding is available to terminal operators and all are urged to sign up. For terminals which do not engage, Tunley will calculate emissions based on publicly available data.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of incentives for operators to reduce their emissions. The port authority points out that government funding is available to help operators reduce truck emissions at ports and that switching to more environmentally friendly fuels such as low sulphur diesel can often be done as a like-for-like replacement. Furthermore, electric equipment often has lower operating costs and grants are available with capital outlay.<\/p>\n
