{"id":3834,"date":"2023-11-06T14:02:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-06T14:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2023\/11\/06\/south-african-ports-plan-their-hydrogen-roadmap\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:07:24","slug":"south-african-ports-plan-their-hydrogen-roadmap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/south-african-ports-plan-their-hydrogen-roadmap\/","title":{"rendered":"South African ports plan their hydrogen roadmap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cisp.cachefly.net\/assets\/articles\/attachments\/91782_rfi_-_hydrogen_initiatives_at_tnpa_commercial_seaport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RFI<\/a> assesses market interest in developing, designing, constructing, financing, operating and maintaining an import and export terminal for hydrogen initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>This includes green&nbsp;hydrogen, green ammonia, green methanol, and or grey hydrogen at the ports of Cape Town,&nbsp;Durban, East London, Mossel Bay, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth and Saldanha.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe introduction of this initiative is part of TNPA\u2019s strategic projects that enable Just&nbsp;Transition, making it a step closer to enabling greener shipping and decarbonization of the&nbsp;company\u2019s marine fleet in order to remain globally competitive,\u201d said Amanda Makgoga,&nbsp;TNPA sector specialist, renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen roadmap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TNPA\u2019s project is in line with the Hydrogen Society Roadmap for South Africa, approved by&nbsp;Cabinet in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It also supports the National Development Plan 2030, which advocates for&nbsp;increased investment in an energy sector that is both economically inclusive and&nbsp;environmentally sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>Such projects could help put South Africa on the map of project developers&nbsp;as an investment destination of choice, especially as an energy hub.<\/p>\n<p>Back in July, TNPA achieved another milestone in its ambitions to become a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>It said that a state owned logistics company has identified three consortia that will present proposals for a new port and railway infrastructure for manganese ore and green hydrogen exports.<\/p>\n<p>There are three competing groups to submit proposals for the design, funding and construction of the planned deepwater port of Boegoebaai and its associated rail links.
