{"id":4623,"date":"2024-09-05T12:22:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T11:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2024\/09\/05\/worlds-largest-methanol-ship-in-action\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:11:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:11:49","slug":"worlds-largest-methanol-ship-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/worlds-largest-methanol-ship-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s largest methanol ship in action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Christened in Aarhus in August, the 16,592 teu <em>Antonia Maersk<\/em> serves the AE5\/Albatross route, part of the 2M shipping alliance.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second methanol-powered container ship to regularly call at the port after the <em>Laura Maersk<\/em> began serving the Gothenburg\/Bremerhaven route earlier this spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ship represents another piece of the puzzle for the transition towards sustainable shipping,\u201d said Jacob Minnhagen, senior market development manager at the Port of Gothenburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is, of course, particularly exciting that this ship regularly calls at the Port of Gothenburg on one of our most important trade routes, benefiting Swedish industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in addition to reducing our customers transport emissions\u2014it also reduces emissions in our port and provides cleaner air in the city of Gothenburg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both ships are powered by bio-methanol, which means a savings of 280 tonnes of carbon dioxide each day the ship is in operation, according to Maersk\u2019s own data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith <em>Antonia Maersk<\/em>, we are taking another important, concrete step in the green transition of shipping and enhancing our Sweden-based customers\u2019 ability to further reduce their transport emissions,\u201d said Birna \u00d6defors, area managing director Nordics at A.P. Moller Maersk, adding that the company was planning a further 20 methanol-powered ships by 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Today, there are around 30 methanol-powered container ships in operation with nearly 300 more on order. Methanol-powered ships account for about 10% of the total order book today.
