Covering an area roughly the size of the Isle of Man (593 km\u00b2), Sofia is expected to provide electricity for 1.2 million UK homes, reinforcing England\u2019s north-east as a leader in offshore wind energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s why we\u2019ve developed our Tyne Clean Energy Park, which has been earmarked for renewable energy production tenants, while supporting our intentionally ambitious vision for a cleaner, greener future.\u201d<\/p>\n
This significant project, led by Van Oord, has already attracted \u00a33 billion in investment and created numerous jobs, both directly and indirectly. Since May, over 25% of the foundations for the 100 wind turbines have been installed in the North Sea, each measuring 80 to 90 metres in length and weighing between 1,200 and 1,550 tonnes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeeing the first foundations being installed at sea is a hugely symbolic moment in the construction of every wind farm,\u201d said project director, Matthew Swanwick. \u201cThe Sofia project is around fourteen years in the making and the construction phase has around two further years yet to go.\u201d<\/p>\n
