{"id":4814,"date":"2024-11-19T12:40:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T12:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2024\/11\/19\/nz-embraces-electrification-on-the-quayside\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:12:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:12:54","slug":"nz-embraces-electrification-on-the-quayside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/energy-technology-greenport\/nz-embraces-electrification-on-the-quayside\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ embraces electrification on the quayside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NZ$17 million Liebherr LHM600E crane, supported by NZ$500,000 in co-funding from EECA\u2019s Low Emission Transport Fund, is a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions and enhancing port equipment efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project will show how electrification of critical port equipment can be seamlessly integrated into operations, giving confidence to the wider industry,\u201d said Richard Briggs, EECA group manager, delivery and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slashed emissions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The crane, which stands 52.8 metres tall and weighs 640 tonnes, is designed for dual-mode operation, using electricity for up to 85% of its work while retaining diesel capability for flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>This innovative feature is expected to cut Port Nelson\u2019s Scope 1 emissions from cranes, currently 22% of the total, while also reducing noise pollution and operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Port Nelson is retrofitting an existing diesel crane with an electric motor, backed by NZ$375,000 from EECA.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Hugh Morrison highlighted the broader benefits.
