The project, known as BilbOPS, will allow vessels to connect to the power grid when berthed, cutting fuel consumption, gas emissions and noise levels. The works are expected to take 24 months to complete, with proposals due by 31 January 2025.<\/p>\n
Financed by the port authority, the project has also secured a \u20ac14.2 million grant from the European Commission as part of the CEF Transport 2021-2027 funding programme.<\/p>\n
This phase, the most ambitious of the two planned, will focus on the electrification of key dock areas including the ferry, RoPax, RoRo and container terminals, along with cruise ship berths.<\/p>\n
To meet the power demands, the installation will include 11 transformation centres, three distribution centres and 11 OPS connection points, with 20 flexible power sockets across the quayside.<\/p>\n
Additionally, a 1.34-kilometre subsea cable will be laid from Santurtzi to bolster the power supply to the cruise ship docks. The entire OPS network will run on renewable energy, with four photovoltaic solar arrays generating 4.25 MWp.<\/p>\n
This project is part of the port\u2019s broader energy transition plan, aligning with its 2023-2026 strategy plan to become a green port that supports sustainability. The first phase of electrification, awarded in December 2023, is focused on Dock A5 and is expected to be operational in early 2026.<\/p>\n
