The Los Angeles Marine Emission Reduction (LA MER) project in partnership with Catalina Express and Harbor Breeze Cruises, includes building a passenger ferry and two zero-emission-capable port vessels to advance cleaner marine technologies.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo achieve our goal of becoming a zero-emission port, we need to incorporate a range of emission-reduction technologies throughout our port complex, as well as promote their commercialisation,\u201d said Gene Seroka, executive director, Port of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
Renewable power<\/strong><\/p>\n Catalina Express will construct a new ferry powered by Tier 4 engines and renewable diesel, replacing older vessels to improve efficiency and emissions.<\/p>\n \u201cIn addition to the re-engine projects, the company has worked with their fuel provider to migrate a majority of the Catalina Express vessels to renewable diesel, which is derived from a base of soybean oil and other vegetable stocks,\u201d said Greg Bombard, president and CEO of Catalina Express.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Harbor Breeze Cruises will introduce two zero-emission-capable excursion boats, designed to operate in emission-free mode for up to 100% of trips.<\/p>\n \u201cThe forward-thinking San Pedro Bay ports are tackling local and global challenges to reduce pollutants and create a healthier community,\u201d said Capt Dan Salas, founder of Harbor Breeze Cruises.<\/p>\n Grant partners Catalina Express and Harbor Breeze Cruises will each contribute a US$15 million match toward their respective demonstration programme.
