{"id":5041,"date":"2025-02-21T11:22:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T11:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/02\/21\/ammonia-training-standards-released\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:14:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:14:20","slug":"ammonia-training-standards-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/ammonia-training-standards-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Ammonia training standards released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>These <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lr.org\/en\/knowledge\/research-reports\/2025\/ammonia-as-fuel-competencies-and-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reports<\/a>, released under the \u2018Ammonia as Fuel \u2013 Competencies and Training\u2019 project, provide a roadmap for preparing seafarers for ammonia-fuelled ship operations, detailing minimum regulatory requirements, necessary competencies for both onboard and shore-based personnel and role-specific training for a safe transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current framework for seafarer training is a baseline, but is insufficient to meet ammonia\u2019s unique safety challenges,\u201d said Martin Eriksen, head of safety leadership &amp; operations at MMMCZCS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ammonia as Fuel \u2013 Competencies and Training project addresses these gaps. Existing frameworks must incorporate specialised knowledge about the unique characteristics and hazards that accompany this fuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An industry acceptance survey conducted by the MMMCZCS showed a strong willingness among seafarers to work with ammonia-fuelled vessels, but emphasised that proper training is crucial for this shift.<\/p>\n<p>The three reports include a project summary, a technical report addressing training standards, and a second technical report on competencies for operational, maintenance and emergency-response scenarios.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Call for action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reports call for action from shipowners, operators, seafarers, technology providers, regulators and training institutes to implement the recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>Key interventions include improving work practices, occupational health and process safety training.
