At DP World’s Vancouver terminal, 19 RTGs account for half of all diesel use and over 4,200 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Hydrogen technology offers a promising zero-emission alternative.

The pilot project, launched in October 2023, retrofitted a diesel RTG with an integrated hydrogen-electric generator, battery energy storage, hydrogen storage module, regenerative braking and safety systems.

The hydrogen-powered crane stores up to 135 kg of hydrogen in 15 high-pressure tanks and uses fuel cells to power its electric drive, recapturing energy during container lowering.

Developed in partnership with TYCROP Manufacturing, H2 Portable and HTEC, the initiative is a first-of-its-kind in North America.

Scott Mason, president and chief executive at TYCROP, said the project had achieved a major milestone in zero-emission power. “During factory acceptance testing, the system ran continuously for 16 hours, lifting and lowering a 40-ton load 105 times and emitted only steam, rather than 400 kilograms of CO2 from a comparable diesel unit,” he said.

If successful, DP World may convert all 25 diesel RTGs in Vancouver and Prince Rupert and expand trials to include electric terminal tractors and vehicles.

DP World has completed initial testing of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.

[7,33
40,249,10,1054,763

post-5249","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-alternative-fuels-greenport","category-americas-greenport","tag-alternative-fuels","tag-dp-world","tag-hydrogen","tag-port-of-vancouver","tag-rtg-crane
["GET
