{"id":5264,"date":"2025-05-07T19:47:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T18:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/05\/07\/orkneys-new-renewable-energy-hub\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:15:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:15:47","slug":"orkneys-new-renewable-energy-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/projects-initiatives-greenport\/orkneys-new-renewable-energy-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Orkney\u2019s new renewable energy hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is teaming up with ACCIONA, as part of a joint venture on the Scapa Deep Water Quay in Holm on the Orkney Islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelopment of our harbour infrastructure in Orkney is key to attracting private investment into the area, creating new highly paid jobs and unlocking enormous economic opportunities for our islands,\u201d said&nbsp;Councillor Kristopher Leask, chair of the Council\u2019s Development and Infrastructure Committee<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA), which is set to total an estimated GB\u00a37.2m, will see a series of activity carried out, including outline design, ground and marine investigation works and site surveys.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the joint venture, North Wales-headquartered Jones Bros will construct the access road from the A961 to the port, as well as a 20-hectare esplanade.<\/p>\n<p>The civil engineering contractor\u2019s work also includes cut and fill operations, pavement, construction of causeways to the new quay wall,and the placing of rock armour protection. It aims to complete the project with a keen eye on&nbsp;repurposing of materials throughout.<\/p>\n<p>One of the largest natural deep-water harbours in northern Europe, the proposed facility will be capable of accommodating large vessels and provide a centre for the construction and assembly of wind turbines \u2013 both fixed and floating \u2013 and associated foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Scapa Deep Water Quay adds to the Scottish portfolio of Jones Bros, which is currently working on North Kyle and Windy Standard III wind farms.
