Beginning July 1, 2025, the port will buy renewable energy certificates at a fixed rate of US$36 each. Each certificate equates to one megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean electricity added to the grid.<\/p>\n
The deal is expected to contribute between 11,300 and 17,700 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to meet 10% to 15% of the port\u2019s total electricity demand.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis agreement underscores the Port of Oakland\u2019s commitment to sustainability and its ongoing efforts to reduce emissions from powering port operations,\u201d said Andre Basler, Port of Oakland director of utilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy leveraging local renewable energy sources, the port is not only enhancing its sustainability credentials but also strengthening its partnership with local organisations like EBMUD.\u201d<\/p>\n
EBMUD\u2019s West Oakland facility is uniquely equipped to generate surplus energy from biogas, a byproduct of wastewater treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur plant produces more electricity than it consumes, allowing us to be self-sufficient and a net energy producer,\u201d said Amit Mutsuddy, EBMUD director of wastewater.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis deal supports the port\u2019s operations while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n
