{"id":5528,"date":"2025-07-29T10:50:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T09:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/07\/29\/solar-power-slashes-portsmouth-port-costs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:17:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:17:24","slug":"solar-power-slashes-portsmouth-port-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/products-services-greenport\/solar-power-slashes-portsmouth-port-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar power slashes Portsmouth Port costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The port reports that since switching on its solar array in late 2023, it has harnessed solar technology to deliver major savings and progress its ambitious port electrification strategy.<\/p>\n<p>With 2,660 solar panels generating 1.2MW, and a 1.3MWh battery to store excess energy, the system now supplies up to 35% of the port\u2019s electricity needs.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Kimberly Barrett, Portsmouth City Council\u2019s cabinet member for climate change and greening the city, said: \u201cOur port is striving to become the UK\u2019s first emissions-free port by 2050, and is testament to our city\u2019s environmental ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe low electricity bills demonstrate the real-world impact this forward-thinking strategy is having, saving money for our residents in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Off-grid capabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Portsmouth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/environment-and-sustainability\/solar-park-switches-on-at-portsmouth-port\/1486783.article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">switched on its solar array<\/a> in the latter part of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The solar panels, mounted across port buildings and innovative solar canopies over car lanes, have enabled the site to run entirely off-grid on sunny days.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 12 months alone, they met 21% of total electricity demand.
