{"id":5534,"date":"2025-07-30T07:16:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T06:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/07\/30\/a-hydrogen-highway-to-drive-green-shipping\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:17:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:17:25","slug":"a-hydrogen-highway-to-drive-green-shipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/alternative-fuels-greenport\/a-hydrogen-highway-to-drive-green-shipping\/","title":{"rendered":"A hydrogen highway to drive green shipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pla.co.uk\/maritime-hydrogen-highway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maritime Hydrogen Highway<\/a>, led by the Port of London Authority (PLA), explored the full hydrogen supply chain &#8211; from offshore generation to port bunkering &#8211; in a GB\u00a31.2 million programme backed by Maritime Research and Innovation UK (MarRI-UK) and the Department for Transport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis programme is about taking a lead on maritime decarbonisation,\u201d said Robin Mortimer, CEO, PLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom floating wind to autonomous hydrogen vessels, we\u2019ve demonstrated a theoretically viable option for green hydrogen generation and transportation using existing infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hydrogen delivery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The three-year study found that green hydrogen, produced by UK floating windfarms and delivered by autonomous vessels, could slash emissions and fuel costs across maritime and local logistics networks.<\/p>\n<p>The model aimed to reduce reliance on pipelines by using mobile hydrogen containers, delivering hydrogen at just GB\u00a36 to \u00a37 per kg, half the cost of other sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHydrogen presents a huge opportunity for the UK\u2019s port cities.
