{"id":5710,"date":"2025-09-22T11:21:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T10:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portstrategy.nfdtesting.uk\/greenport\/2025\/09\/22\/zero-emission-inland-shipping-launched\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T14:18:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:18:34","slug":"zero-emission-inland-shipping-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.portstrategy.com\/greenport\/news\/europe-greenport\/zero-emission-inland-shipping-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero-emission inland shipping launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting today, the inland vessel MS <em>Den Bosch Max Groen<\/em> will operate with exchangeable battery containers, marking a new era in green shipping with zero emissions of CO2, nitrogen or particulate matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is our mission to make inland shipping emission-free,\u201d said Michael Beemer, chief executive of ZES.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are achieving this with support from the National Growth Fund and the Province of South Holland. With our pay-per-use model, shipowners pay only for the energy they actually consume. This makes the switch to battery-electric sailing financially more attractive. In addition, a subsidy scheme is available for shipowners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ZES\u2019s innovative solution uses mobile, swappable battery containers known as Zespacks which supply clean energy to vessels without the need for lengthy charging periods.<\/p>\n<p>The launch on the route between Den Bosch and the Port of Rotterdam is part of the expanded ZES 2.0 network. \u201cVessels can now swap containers at three locations \u2013 Alphen aan den Rijn, Alblasserdam and Den Bosch, with more terminals soon to follow,\u201d said Beemer.<\/p>\n<p>Eduard Backer, chief executive of ITG, highlighted the environmental impact. \u201cBy working together with ZES, Heineken and Nedcargo, we are achieving our sustainability ambitions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project cuts CO2 emissions by 800 tonnes a year.
